EASTSIDE ARTS FESTIVAL | big print powell street paueru gai 2025 carving demonstration
Get ready to witness incredible carving skills at the Big Print Powell Street/Paueru Gai 2025 demonstration!
Drop in for a unique opportunity to witness the artistry behind large-scale woodblock printing. As part of the Eastside Arts Festival, Georgia Art Studio will host drop-in carving sessions on July 24th from 5:30 – 6:30 PM, 6:30 -7:30 PM and finally at 7:30 -8:30 PM, each capped at 20 people.
Each session, the artists will give a short talk and lead a discussion about their project before demonstrating their carving process.
These artists are part of the Big Print Powell/Paueru-Gai project, a celebration of community, culture, and connection to Powell Street past and present.
Artists selected for this project will design their own block design to reflect their community and connection with Powell Street. Their design is transcribed onto a 4 ft x 8 ft woodblock in preparation for carving. Using primarily hand-held gouges and chisels, artists then carve out the negative forms, leaving the relief elements to be inked and printed. Drop by and watch the process unfold!
Big Print project brings the sanctuary of the studio out onto the street and into the public realm. It re-imagines the process of relief printing by presenting the process in this publicly-accessible form of street performance. The final printing of all woodblocks will take place on Alexander Street during the days of Powell Festival, August 2nd and 3rd 2025. Everyone is invited to join us!
This event is presented in partnership with Creative Cultural Collaborations Society (C3).
